KickerOpenbox - First China Skater on Thrasher Mag

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of VISION STREET WEAR. Danny has been traveling frequently between the US and China this year, searching for rare treasures for VISION. Among his 962 kilograms of cargo, he found a special issue of THRASHER Magazine. This issue features the first known Chinese skater to ever have a submission published in the magazine!

This is the December 1985 issue of THRASHER. The cover skater is the legendary Dave Hackett, who is currently a member of the Skateboarding Hall of Fame Executive Committee and has hosted many of the Hall of Fame ceremonies.

It is in this very issue, within the reader submission column "Photograffiti," that a mysterious Chinese skater named Curtis appeared.

During that era in China, it was absolutely not easy to own a skateboard, manage to take a photograph, and submit it to THRASHER Magazine in San Francisco.

Let's SEARCH FOR ANIMAL CURTIS!

Special thanks to Jocko Weyland. We met in Beijing back in 2005 during Danny Way's jump over the Great Wall, and then reunited several times in Beijing and LA, but we still keep in touch.

Early September this year, he sent me an email and mentioned he had found a Chinese skater in a 1989 issue of Thrasher. I then forwarded the message to my friend Danny, who works for Vision Street Wear China and was in the U.S. at the time. Danny went to the Lookback Library and found this issue. Now, we are digging into the past to explore the history of Chinese skateboarding a little bit more.
