We caught up with NOMATTSLAND, Hongkong based Matt Bailey, who collaborated with Skullcandy on a unique piece of Skate Deck Art. Find out more about the artist and his work “ELECTRIFY”, a clay and wire sculpture with tow incorporated Skullcandy headphones:

SKATE DECK ART / Q Please tell us more about yourself and your work!

NOMATTSLAND / A
I’m actually a multimedia artist, with a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Acting.
During an acting course I learned a great deal about the art of puppetry and became a professional puppeteer in Los Angeles. I’m also a scriptwriter for video games and television, a cinematographer for corporate events, short films and ice hockey games, and I act in commercials and films.
My visual arts background started from just constant practice in my spare time, which then evolved into my own arts exhibitions in Los Angeles, the UK and Hong Kong. My main medium right now is clay and wire, after spending many years doing acrylic paints and digital illustrations. Throughout the years, no matter what medium I work in, the genre is always quite consistent, which is the exploration of third-culture kids and the sense of home through science fiction and fantasy.

Q What is special about the collaboration with Skullcandy for SDA?

A Being given two headphones, plus a skateboard as the canvas leaves much for the imagination to kick in and fill in the gaps. Still keeping to my medium of clay and wire, and finding the symmetry of what the headphones shapes gave me, it very quickly took me to a place of science fiction and fantasy.

Q What is the inspiration for this particular artwork?

A An alternate world. Usually I draw inspiration from fantastical stories that I read. My work always tells a story.
For this piece, I was inspired by an old story of two species living on the same planet, where one species attempts to wipe out the other. The imagery in my piece depicts something similar, a giant technologically based monster wiping out a civilization but finally being challenged by one lone hero, ready to take it on.

Q SDA is a unique concept and breaks down borders between boardsports, fine art and urban art. Tell us more about your contribution in the group show and how it influenced your creation for SKDY.

A I had seen a lot of artwork on skateboards before, and when I was invited to take part in the show, my first question was, if I could do a sculpture on the board, as opposed to just painting on it. I wanted to create something different than what had already been seen, plus I wanted to continue my exploration of clay and wire, plus a new-found love, spray painting.
