So this is something people have been talking about forever, and now it could turn into a reality: Skateboarding might actually become an Olympic sport, starting at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo.

Sports Illustrated reports that the organizers have shortlisted nine sports—down from a list of 26, submitted on June 12—for inclusion in the Games. Among them are baseball, karate, softball, and "roller sports"—which, according to Fujio Mitarai, chair of the selection panel, includes skateboarding.

As Miterai told ESPN, chief among the panel's concerns are two questions: "Does the sport have the support of the younger generation, and how big is the population of the sport worldwide?"

The bodies representing all of these sports—in the case of skating, this is seemingly the International Roller Sports Federation—will make their respective cases to the organizers of the 2020 Games in August. Then, on Sept. 30, they'll deliver a final proposal to International Olympic Committee. The actual decisions will be made next August, before the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Games.

If skating actually does become an Olympic sport, one can only wonder how that whole drug testing thing will play out.
