The cliche of the high school gym class – with its out of shape teachers; laps, and unenthused competitions – is a lasting caricature in the high school experience. Leave it to Sweden to shift the paradigm though, where the Malmö community banded together to integrate skateboarding directly into the high school experience. Where some schools in America – notably East Side Community High School and Essex Street Academy in New York City – have dabbled with skateboarding as physical education, Bryggeriet Gymnasium integrates aspects from skateboarding into the curriculum. This involves architecture and media editing classes alongside core math, science, and language courses. Philadelphia videographer Chris Mulhern travelled to Malmö in 2012 to get the full story, returning with the above piece.
