As the cultural partner of the exhibition, Nike SB teamed up with Fotografiska Shanghai to roll out a series of public events celebrating skate culture, including this featured video podcast session.

In 1979, French photographer James Andanson captured scenes in Beijing of local kids and youth getting their first glimpse of skateboards and foreign skate magazines.

Decades passed before American skateboarder Jocko Weyland chanced upon these prints in the Sygma New York archives and reached out to share them. Now, right here at Fotografiska, we are finally able to reconnect with a foundational puzzle piece of early Chinese skateboarding history.

Another fascinating side note: James Andanson originally visited China in the wake of newly established diplomatic relations and was also the man behind another iconic image—The Boy Drinking Coca-Cola on The Great Wall. The boy in the photo is Hei Jiantao. Years later, he founded his own investment firm, achieving considerable business success, and also served as CCTV’s professional golf commentator during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The full backstory of that legendary shot is well documented across the internet, and well worth looking up on your own.
