Volcano Skate in Foshan released their shop video RESET to mark their 12th anniversary. After a 10-year hiatus, we’ve once again invited the founder of Volcano, Jiang Rong (Glory), to join us on KickerRadio to discuss the new film and the past decade.
Glory also brought us plenty of fresh perspectives: in an era where sales and social interactions have fully migrated online, how should local skate shops across different regions reposition themselves? And what does the slogan "Support Your Local" truly mean in today's world?
HIGHLIGHTS
The value and meaning of a skate shop's existence today are completely different from 12 years ago. Back then, a physical shop was a channel—a place to buy gear, meet friends, and go find spots together.
With the evolution of the internet, mobile networks, and social media, most shopping and social needs can now be fulfilled online. Skate shops need to find a new way to reposition themselves.
The concept of "Support Your Local" is also shifting today. It used to mean going to a skate shop to shop and buy gear, but now it should mean "supporting what the skate shop is actually doing," rather than thinking, "You're doing skate lessons now, so you're not 'real' anymore."
Support Your Local is about more than just products. It’s about taking it upon yourself to discover more spots and stack clips on them; it’s about supporting local events and then using social media to push your local skate culture out there. You, yourself, are the "local."
