Wang Guohua - Hello Hoodie

For months, filmer @bobja1 has been clocking in for "overtime" after his day job—work he loves but gets no "overtime pay" for—all to film Wang Guohua's personal video part.

The process involved hundreds of costly fails, battling the temperature, and sheer exhaustion. After picking a spot, they had to consider the fit; after landing the trick, they had to consider the film's structure. Even after the filming wrapped, Aibo still had to wrestle with the music until the very end.

We sat down with both of them for a deep dive conversation about the filming, the tricks, the production, and the current state of the skate filmer. Let's get into it.

几个月来,摄像师艾博在下班后都在继续“加班”,打一个他很爱但基本没有“加班费”的工,就是拍摄王国华的个人影片。从几百次不计成本的失败,到和温度,体力作战……选择完地形,还要考虑穿搭,拍完动作还要思考影片结构。甚至在拍完,还要继续和音乐死磕到底。

我们也和他们深度聊了聊关于拍摄,动作,制作,滑板摄像师现状等内容,一起看看。

Filmer Interview

🎙️ How long did the video take to film, and when did you usually shoot?

"From the start of the project to the end, it was nine months, but the actual shooting days were maybe 38 to 42 days? Something like that. Making it an 'all night' video was planned from the very beginning; I even hinted at Ji Ge's next video part at the end of High Zai's video—giving it that connective feeling.

We basically only filmed after I got off work. Toward the end of the video, Ji Ge was shooting in a hoodie in 32-degree heat! 😂 That’s dedication! The intro also went through two or three versions at two different spots. One night, after wrapping the skate session, we went to film the intro and didn't stop until the sun came up. That’s why the burnout footage at the end is from the early morning."

🎙️ 这部片子拍了多久?都什么时候拍的?

从开拍到结束是九个月,实际可能 38-42 天?差不多。做一个 all night 的片子也是最开始定好的,我在 high仔的片子后面有暗示下个片就是鸡哥的,链接的感觉。

拍摄时间基本都是我下班后。到片子尾声时鸡哥顶着 32度高温穿帽衫拍 😂 敬业!

然后就是片头有两三个版本,两个不同的场地。有一天晚上拍完滑板我们又去拍片头。拍完天都亮了。这就是为啥结尾烧胎的素材是清晨的原因。

🎙️ What was your main job, and how did you still have the energy to film skateboarding after all that grueling work?

"My main job was jewelry and still-life photography. I just made a career change recently to finally go pursue something I've wanted to do since '21.

I've been in this grind (filming after work) for nearly three years now. Sometimes I don't get enough rest, and the next day is definitely exhausting, but every time I'm on the way to the spot, I'm genuinely excited. All I can think about is what the shots will look like today, whether the trick will be landed quickly, or if the execution will be perfect."

🎙️ 你本来工作是什么,为什么做完牛马还有力气想继续拍滑板?

我本职工作是拍摄珠宝\静物摄影。刚刚转职,去做一下 21 年就想做的事。

(下班去拍滑板)我这种状态持续了快三年了。有时没有休息好第二天确实累,但每次去 spot 路上都是非常期待的。想的是今天拍的效果是什么样的。动作收得快不快。做得完不完美。

🎙️ Besides getting a finished video, what other rewards come from this dedication?

"I’ve filmed four full videos now, and another one is 85% done. When I'm working on these projects, I don’t have time to think about how much money I’ll get or if it’ll make me famous. Being a skate filmer isn't even really a profession; nobody makes real money shooting skateboarding. It's been that way for years.

If you’re worried about whether filming will bring you fame and money, the best thing to do is just not film. If you don't shoot, you don't face those problems. It won't buy you dinner or improve your living situation.

But it lets you do something you love, and you get to endlessly review, improve, and level up your skills. Plus, causing a little stir in the skate scene feels pretty damn good, too."

🎙️ 这个坚持除了能收获一个作品,还有别的回报吗?

我现在已经拍了四部 Video,还有一部完成了 85%。

在创作这些项目时我没有时间去想,我会得到多少钱,能不能让我出名等。其实滑板摄影师都算不上一个职业,没有人靠拍滑板赚到钱了。这么多年都是这样。

如果你纠结拍滑板能不能给你带来名和利的话,那最好的方式就是不拍。你不拍就不会面对这些问题。它不能给你带来吃喝,不能让你的生活有改善。

但是能让你干一件你喜欢的事情,然后无限复盘/改进和提升。引发小圈子里的轰动也很爽。

This really comes down to a question of values. A lot of people stop filming eventually; it's often thankless work.

I feel like this process itself is about cultural inheritance and laying the foundation for the next generation. Skate filmers are absolutely necessary, and the more the better. Maybe the footage you shoot will inspire the next person to start filming.

Since you were chosen to establish this link with skateboarding and skate photography—don't run from it, don't hide. Sure, it's marginal. But as a skater yourself, aren't you marginal? Skaters are, after all, a group of people detached from mainstream society.

这就是价值观的问题。很多人拍到后面都不拍了。费力不讨好。

我感觉这本身就是在做一个文化的传承与铺垫。滑板摄影师是必须存在的,而且越多越好。没准你拍的东西就能影响下一个人也想拍滑板。既然被选中了,让你和滑板/滑板摄影产生了一点链接。别逃别躲。

虽然它非常的边缘。但是你作为一个滑手,你不边缘吗?其实滑手就是脱离社会的一群人。

🎙️ What are the hardest parts about filming skateboarding?

"First off, a video part takes forever. The input-to-output ratio is literally 9:1. Plus, you have to be able to skate yourself so you can actually understand and anticipate the trick.

No money, no sponsors—you finally finish filming the damn thing after a half-year or a year, only for it to be released for free online, get hype for one day, and then be forgotten. On top of all that, you need constant, round-the-clock self-motivation.

Anyone who is still dedicated to filming skateboarding today is a fucking artist. 😂 Compared to doing literally anything else, this is starving."

🎙️ 拍滑板很难的点在哪?

首先是,一部片子需要很久的时间。投入·产出的比例是9:1。另外就是你得会滑板,你能知道/理解这个动作。

没钱没赞助,拍个tm半年一年终于结束了,最后免费发在网上活跃了一天被遗忘。还需要无时无刻的自我激励。

到现在还在坚持拍滑板的人就是tm艺术家。😂对比别的简直是太饿了。

🎙️ Post-production must have been tough. How many versions did you end up cutting?

"I didn't cut many versions. I kept holding off because we were constantly debating the music. That dragged on for over a month. Eventually, I couldn't take it anymore, set a final deadline, and just worked like crazy to finish."

🎙️ Were there big disagreements over the music selection?

"Yes, there were huge disagreements. At one point, it felt like we almost blew up at each other, because I finished cutting the whole thing to the first track, and I just didn't feel it at all."

🎙️ 后期工作应该也很辛苦吧,一共剪了多少版?

没剪很多版。因为一直在讨论这个音乐的事情,所以就没动。拖了一个月多。后来我受不了了,定了个结束日期,狂赶。

🎙️ 选音乐有很大分歧吗?

是的。有很大分歧。期间还有微微爆吵的感觉,因为第一首剪完全部我实在没感觉。

🎙️ The trick that left the deepest impression on you, what’s the story behind it?

“The Big Spin down to the street on Middle Huaihai Road. The final attempt was a one-take. Security came over, there was an argument, we communicated, and then they said they’d give us one last chance. Boom, it landed clean, perfect! There are too many, though. Honestly, all the tricks left a pretty deep impression, haha.”

🎙️ 拍的最深刻的一个动作是什么,有什么故事?

淮海中路大乱落马路。最后一次一镜到底。保安过来,吵架,沟通。然后说给最后一次机会。boom 落地干净,完美!太多了。所有动作印象都挺深刻的哈哈。

🎙️ How do you plan each shoot—the spot selection or the camera angles?

"I first decide whether to use the fisheye or the long lens based on instinct. Then, during the session, I check the footage after every try. I figure out how to improve the next take; it’s always like that. After a try, I review the footage while the skater gets ready for the next one."

🎙️ Ji Ge and High Zai are longtime friends and teammates. What's it like filming them both?

"It's all about being on the same wavelength. I didn't feel much difference between them. I've known High Zai for years. Before I even picked up the fisheye, I was filming his phone clips. It’s the same with Ji Ge."

🎙️ 每次拍摄前会怎么构思,地形或者拍摄角度之类的。

先凭感觉定一下用 Fish eye 还是 long lens。然后拍的过程中,拍一次看一次。想方法下一把改进,每次都是这样。拍完我会在滑手准备下一次的时候回看一下。🎙️ 鸡哥和嗨仔是很多年朋友,也是队友,给他俩拍有什么不同感受?

同频吧,差异感我没太多感觉。因为我认识嗨也很多年了。在我没拿起鱼眼的时候一直给他拍手机的素材。鸡哥也是一样的。

Skater Interview

🎙️ How was the reception for the recent premieres, and where did you screen the video?

"We took it to Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Aranya, and the reception was pretty good. The funny thing is, some friends gave the video a new nickname: 'OOTD MV.'"

🎙️ 最近几场首映反响如何,都去了哪?

这次去了上海,杭州,阿那亚,反响还不错,有趣的是:有朋友给这部片子起了一个新的名字叫做《OOTD MV》。

🎙️ Every spot in the video was matched with an outfit. Did you count how many different looks were used?

"In total: Red, yellow, blue, green, black, white, gray, pink, plaid, camo, and the tree branch print. Around eleven different looks. Oh, and there were also some color-blocking combinations!"

🎙️ 片子每个地形和服饰都有搭配,算过一共有多少套衣服吗?

一共:红黄蓝绿,黑白灰粉,格仔,迷彩,树枝。十一套左右? 哦~还有些是上下撞色!

🎙️ The film title is also related to the hoodie, right?

"That's right. I wanted a cute vibe, something like saying hi to the hoodie and rhyming with 'Hello Kitty.' And then Tracy came up with another great pun: the Chinese pronunciation of 'hoodie' (hù dì) sounds exactly like 'Shanghai spot,' which is where we filmed! It created yet another cool connection."

🎙️ 片名和卫衣也有关系,对吧。

对的。想要可爱的感觉,和卫衣打招呼,和 hello kitty 押韵。然后 Tracy 也给我想了一个梗,hoodie 中文发音“沪地”刚好在沪拍摄 (沪地)又是一个连接的感觉。

🎙️ Does the film have a narrative plot at the beginning? What story is it telling?

"It's a small narrative: I go to the laundry room to do my washing, and that's where my skate memories begin.

First, the fisheye lens acts like the circular glass door of the washing machine, giving the feeling of watching the washing process from the outside. My body posture while skating is meant to represent the various shapes the clothes take inside the drum.

Then, the darkness inside the washer symbolizes night. The circular drum's rotation connects visually to the wheels of skateboards, car tires, and DJ turntables. It's the feeling of all these circular things operating—a connection, a continuous roll through the night!"

🎙️ 整个片子开头是有剧情的吗,讲了个什么故事?

算是一个小剧情,是我去洗衣服,在洗衣房里开始我的滑板回忆 ~

首先是鱼眼镜头就像洗衣机的圆形玻璃,有一种从洗衣机外面在看洗衣服的过程,我在滑板时候的身体姿态就相当于衣服在滚筒里的各种形状。

接着洗衣机里面很黑,象征着在黑夜,然后洗衣机滚筒是圆形,滚动的时候又有连接着滑板轮子/车轮/碟机的轮盘。这些圆形的东西正在运作的感觉。是连接的感觉,是在黑夜中的滚动!

🎙️ What was the most stressful shoot for you?

"Personally, I’d say it was the nollie into the black metal bank. Putting external factors aside, that was the moment of greatest internal stress. After jumping, I just couldn't commit to landing (maybe it was the black spot and the black clothes—it was just too dark, lol). It took a lot of mental preparation just to take that first step! When it finally landed, I was so stoked I broke the board.

🎙️ 让你压力最大的拍摄是哪次?

我个人觉得是 nollie 进黑色铁坡那一次。抛开外界因素,内心压力最大的一次.因为跳出去之后一直不敢踩 (有可能是黑地形黑衣服,太黑了~hhh),做了很久心理建设才迈出第一步!所以成功之后激动的把板踩断了。

🎙️ You also changed your social media name to Rènzhēn Yī Jī Nài (认真一鸡奈). Does that have anything to do with the filming?

"Yes, it's connected. The whole video was filmed at night, and 'Nai' is a play on the word 'night.'

Some spots don't offer many chances, and the lights at others turn off at a certain time. Plus, if we filmed on a weekday, Aibo had to work the next day, so we couldn't shoot too late. Every time we wanted to wrap up fast, we had to be very serious about landing the trick. Because you only need one serious hit (认真一击)!"

🎙️ 你现在还改了社交媒体的名字(认真一鸡奈)和拍摄有什么关系吗

是有关系的。整个片段在夜晚,奈就是 night 。有些地形机会没那么多,有些地形的灯光到点会关闭,还有工作日的话第二天艾老师要上班,所以我们拍摄不能太晚。每次想要快点完成拍摄,就要认真去做动作。因为只需要认真一击!

🎙️ Are you still wearing your knee brace? How is your leg doing now?

"My leg is doing great now, very healthy. But when I'm going for a challenging trick, I still wear it to reinforce it—it gives me a +1 to my sense of security!"

🎙️ How do you feel after the premiere?

"After releasing the video, my heart feels empty, a hollow feeling. It's like the washing machine door has been opened; the clothes are washed, clean, and smell great. When you take them out, the drum is empty, and the trace of all that energy becomes a memory. I'm very grateful to Aibo for documenting it. Of course, my friends also passed a lot of energy to me, which made me feel deeply moved, and it makes me want to keep gathering energy!"

🎙️ 你的膝盖保持器还戴着吗?现在腿怎么样了?

现在腿还不错,很健康,但是当我要去挑战的时候还是会带,加固一下,会安全感+1 !🎙️ 首映完有什么感觉?

把片子放出来 ,心里感觉空掉了,空洞的感觉。好像是把洗衣机的门打开了,衣服洗好了,干净了,香了。拿出来滚筒也空了,能量的痕迹变成回忆。
